Reiki helps cats, dogs, horses, birds, and any other household or farmyard animal, as well as wildlife. Reiki is a wonderful complement to other therapies that may be helping the animal to recover. It is not meant as a substitute for veterinary care. Always consult your veterinarian about the best course of medical treatment for your animal.
Reiki can be used for all types of illnesses and injuries in animals, especially soothing and comforting animals that are nervous, in pain, or having difficulty recuperating from surgery. Reiki has principles, or symbols, that automatically set the intent as positive, and does not rely on the belief to work. The healer is a transmitter of healing energy to which animals respond amazingly well and faster than humans. Animals have no preconceived notions to get over, and so they often do not have a barrier to work through. They understand healing energy and its benefits immediately. Some will actually come looking for it. Often animals smell or lick the practitioner’s hands to investigate the energy coming from them.
Animals too afraid to be touched, unable to be moved, aggressive, or wild, can be treated as effectively from a distance through an absentee healing. It is always their choice whether or not to receive treatment, as well as how the treatment will be administered. Some will come right over and allow the practitioner to place their hands gently on them. Others prefer to be treated with the hands slightly above them or from a distance. Both methods are equally beneficial to your animal. It just depends on how sensitive the animal is to energy. Reiki energy flows to where it is most needed, so even if the practitioner can't determine the root cause of a problem, it will be treated. Many animals sigh or yawn and become very relaxed, and many fall asleep by the end of the treatment. Absentee or distant treatments are also appropriate when there is a more urgent situation since they can usually be done within a day of being scheduled. They are also good for maintenance between in-person treatments.
Animal Reiki appointments take place at the home or barn of the animal, for their comfort and security. It's recommended that the animal initially be treated 4 times within a few weeks for best results. People often notice a change in their animal soon after the first treatment; whether it be a more relaxed state, return to eating/sleeping habits or more energy. Animals give such unconditional love; offering them the healing of Reiki can give something back to them for all that they have given us.
Usually within a few minutes of either treatment, the animal will start to relax. Some animals sense the energy is coming and relax even before the energy starts flowing. With practice and focused positive intent, the Reiki practitioner can balance the animals’ energy to help restore balance and health. In almost all animals who have received Reiki (even once) their healing responses tend to be accelerated and they have less pain. It is assumed that this is because the energy strengthens the immune system to support the body.
